Over the years, many patients have presented concerns about their teeth and treatment.  They ask many questions and some of them are beliefs that are unfounded.

Here are some of them:

1. Every time a crown proceedure is done a root canal is mandatory.  This is not true. Root canals are performed only due to pain, infection or injury.

2. All teeth that have had root canals need crowns. This is not true.  Crowns are recommended after a root canal only if the strength of the remaining

    tooth structure is questionable.

3. All children need fluoride treatments.  This is not true. Fluoride treatments are only recommended for those children who drink non-fluoridated

water or those children deemed to have a high incidence of decay. Otherwise special circumstances may require fluoride treatment.

    See:    http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/pubs/jada/patient/patient_72.pdf

4. Lack of calcium leads to periodontal disease.  This is not true.

5. Crooked teeth lead to more decay and periodontal disease.  This not true.

6. Dietary calcium will strengthen existing enamel.  This not true.

7. All wisdom teeth (3rd molars) must be removed.  This is not true. It is recommended that impacted wisdom teeth for all those under the age of 50

be removed. Otherwise, healthy, erupted wisdom teeth do not have to be removed.

8. Hi-tech, expensive dental equipment and computers means the patient will get better care than an office without this equipment.  This not true.

The Dentist's hands and experience do the work ...NOT the equipment.
